Now this is interesting. We all know that iPhone 4 on Verizon is hitting the stores on February 10th, but what we don’t know is that whether or not it will have the Limera1n exploit patched in the bootrom.
Since Verizon iPhone 4 has slight hardware modifications, such as redesigned antenna system so that it works on CDMA network, and slightly reallocated volume rocker buttons, chances are that Apple might have patched the bootrom based Limera1n exploit in this new hardware. If that’s indeed the case, then Verizon iPhone 4 users wont be able to jailbreak until and unless someone finds another bootrom exploit in the new hardware.
Moreover, the CDMA based iPhone 4 will most likely be running a different version of the OS than the current iPhones, iOS 4.2.5 to be exact with the new “Personal Hotspot” feature. Apple will surely bring this feature to current iPhone 4s too but will they bring it on February 10th or not is something we don’t know. Maybe they will make us wait till iPad 2 to unify all iOS devices under iOS 4.3, or maybe they are going to wait all the way till iOS 5?
About the unlock, the Dev-Team was said to be working on the unlock for iPhone 4 (on newer basebands such as 3.10.01 and 2.10.04) in December last year. Since then, we haven’t heard much from them. Now that we will have two variations of iPhone 4, that is CDMA and GSM, with completely different baseband OS, it will be interesting to see if the Dev-Team will take the challenge of unlocking the CDMA-based iPhone 4 on Verizon so that we can make it work on other networks like Sprint.
We will of course get to know more about this come February 10th. Till then, stay tuned.
